What is the semester going to look like?
You will be required to fill out the Blue form in the next couple of dayslisting your top 3 job choices. This is like a job application. It needs to be filled out with care and attention.
I will take all your requests and try to find the best match possible.
I will contact all the employers to make sure they are willing to take a workplace student.
I will meet with employers and complete safety checks to make sure the business has WCB coverage.
You are notified of your work placement once all academic components are met.
Starting around Easter, you will be working 4 days a week. Mondays will be your classroom day, so you can write in your weekly journal and hand in your time sheet. No time sheets... No mark!
I will monitor you at your work placement. Employers will contact me if there are any issues in the workplace. If there is a problem, a discussion will be had with the employer, administration, and your parents/guardians.
Employers will provide a midterm, and final evaluation of your time with them as an employee. 60% of your mark is classroom and 40% of your mark is workplace.
Today's Work:
Brainstorm: What sort of job do you think you might like?
Now that you have some ideas, let me find out a few details about yourself and why you chose this class. Open the form below. Take/use a picture of yourself (although I HATE classroom selfies..) and attach that picture in the top right corner of the form. Print out the form and fill it in using your best printing possible. Hand the form into the basket on by the printer marked "CWEX". This is where you will ALWAYS hand things in!
6. If you manage to get this finished and that should not be a problem, I would like you to go on the internet and informally research your dream job. Here are some guiding questions:
What is it?
Where do you do this job?
When will you be qualified to start this job?
Why do people do this job? (Why is it important to society to do this job?)
Who will pay you to do this job?
Here is the website with the top 20 jobs in Canada
Save this in your account for now. As we go on, we will build an online portfolio in the form of a wiki. Nearly EVERY assignment will go on your portfolio!
Friday Feb 2, 2018
All About Me
1) Find a picture that best represents you. I do NOT want a picture of you. It HAS to be a picture of something that represents you.
Find the picture
Save picture to GLOBAL - Buettner - CWEX
SAVE Picture as YOUR NAME
2) Prepare three statements that explain how the picture represents you and what it is saying about you.
3) Your name will be chosen randomly. It is now your job to stand up and talk about your picture and yourself! (How else are you going to have an interview?).
Online Portfolios:
4) You will be REQUIRED to create an online portfolio.
To start this process, you will be creating a wiki space for you to use. How do you do that??
a) Go to www.wikispaces.com and create an account. Follow the instructions carefully. Please use a consistent password and username and record them in your phone or somewhere safe..
b) Choose a wiki name that is appropriate to share with an employer. This is a portfolio that you could use for applications for university/SIAST so make sure it is an adult like choice vs. childish name choice.
c) CHANGE your wiki off of a classroom one to either wiki or basic website. Go to settings, general, then application type. Click save
d) Switch your permission to protected! Go to settings, permissions and then you must verify your account. Use this document to help you.
1) Finish picking your theme, colors, and designs of your wiki. (Consider putting a logo on)
2) Create a nice professional looking home page. (What does it say about you? Look at examples from yesterday. Utilize, quotes, pictures, etc.)
3) The very FIRST page to add on your portfolio is an About You page. Once you add the page using the + under pages, then add your assignment from yesterday (picture and explanation that represents you), as well as your Dream Job document that you started on Monday.
NOTE: Keep your portfolio updated regularly or it will cause you A LOT of work in the end. Remember you want this to be something that represents who you are as a person. First impressions take 10 seconds (some of you have met me for the first time and have already made judgments of me and this course - your potential employers do the same thing).

Create a Vision board
Purpose of Career and Work Experience -
Self Awareness - What can we learn about ourselves that will help us in the workplace?
Vision Board - What is it that you want to accomplish in your lifetime? That is a pretty HUGE question. It is your turn now to think out of the box. As yourself, what is it that I really want out of life? Your job will be to complete your own Vision Board.
2. Put together your vision board. Be creative! You will get plenty of time to work on this. Consider using a tack board to make it more original, find personal photos and photos that represent you!
Tuesday, Feb 6
1) If you have not yet presented your picture that represents you, you need to do this tomorrow at the beginning of class so be ready. Every presentation earns you a participation grade!!!
2) Vision Boards! See above for assignment details :)
Wednesday, Feb 7
1) If you have not yet presented your picture that represents you, we are going to do that now!
2) Vision Boards! See above for assignment details :) Present on Monday! 3) Today we are going to be looking at the traits, qualities and personalities of what a good worker looks like. What we will be doing is viewing a few episodes of the show "Under Cover Boss". As we view it, I want you to look for and note the impact that the workers of these companies have on their profession. Open a word doc and make notes for each of the employees (record their names, traits, qualities, skills and personalities) that the "boss" works along side of for each of the three episodes we will watch. I am looking for participation and discussion so wake up!! Keep this doc as you will need it for a future assignment.
4) This is where we are going to look at how to become that employee that someone wants to hire. Print the following assignment and hand-in to the basket. One copy per person please:)
Thursday, February 8, 2018 1) Make sure you hand in your "Getting Along with Others"
2) Vision Board Self-Evaluation. Print out and fill this out about your vision board, then hand in to the folder. Fix up anything if necessary before we present in 10 minutes

I will give a list of names to your period 4 and 5 teachers and they should not mark you absent. You will need to catch up on what you missed in your period four class and go directly form the assembly to your period 5 class. 1) Any more Vision Board Presentations?
2) Insert an Education Page onto your wiki. 3) Answer the following on a word document. Save this document as JOURNALS. This will eventually go onto your wiki, but for now, keep typing your journals on Word.
A) Vocabulary - explain the difference and provide examples
- Job
- Occupation
- Career
B) Roles of Women in the workplace - What are the typical jobs that women are thought to have in the workplace?
C) Roles of Men in the workplace - What are the typical jobs that men are thought to have in the workplace?
D) Should we consider gender to define our roles?

F) Employ-ability Skills - What does it take to get a job? Is it that easy to apply and get accepted right away?
4) Again, we are looking at the traits, qualities and personalities of what a good worker looks like.
5) Sign up for Remind. This is a free and easy way for us to communicate without being able to see each other's numbers. That way, everything is confidential.
Monday, February 12, 2018 - *LIT day
Today we are focusing on YOU as a worker!
1) Journal (on your wiki) on the following quote (I am expecting a paragraph at least the same length as the quote). What does it mean to YOU?
SCREENSHOT your result by clicking "Start,Snipping Tool". If the Snipping Tool does not appear, then click "Start, Accessories, Snipping Tool"
Insert this into your About Me Page.
3) Who are you? - We are going to use the Career Cruising program to uncover what your like and dislikes are when it comes to work. Some of you have used this program before. It is always interesting to revisit career exploration sites. We change with age (whether that is good or bad). As we grow with age, your like and dislikes also change. It could be something as easy as your likes in food, clothing, exercise routine (or lack of :-) ) to what kind of career you want. It is your job to uncover what profession will be best suited to your personality.

Insert both of these into your About Me Page.
4) Using the results above, use the remaining time to start researching where you will want to work. We will talk about this tomorrow/Friday. You can look at this Employer Contact Sheet. Insert your top 5 choices into a second journal for today. Make sure you are specific, don't just put "Superstore", but what DEPARTMENT or what you want to DO at Superstore.

1.Did you do this yesterday??: Using the results above, use the remaining time to start researching where you will want to work. We will talk about this tomorrow/Friday. You can look at this Employer Contact Sheet. Insert your top 5 choices into a second journal for today. Make sure you are specific, don't just put "Superstore", but what DEPARTMENT or what you want to DO at Superstore.
2. Undercover Boss (Last Episode). Making note of the traits and personalities of a good worker!
3. After watching the three episodes of Undercover Boss you will have identified the traits, qualities and personalities of good workers. With the list you have compiled from these episodes you will create a word cloud. There are a number of sites you can use to do this, so you must search the one you want to use. Here is an example: Wordle
Insert all of the words you had written down from the 3 episodes. You should have at LEAST 5 words per episode, for a minimum total of 15 words.
Put this on your Education section of your Wiki.
Create a few talking points. Pick out 1-2 traits per episode (total of 3-6). Explain WHO you saw the trait in and WHAT they did to show that trait. Write these down if you can't remember them :) We will present tomorrow.
4) We are going to have an independent business owner come present tomorrow. He is going to talk about what it takes to start your own business and what he looks for in employees and applicants. You should be prepared to ask questions so that you can learn more about the workforce. What sort of questions could we ask?
Wednesday, Feb 14, 2018 1. If the business person is not here yet, brainstorm in your journal some questions you could ask a small business owner who started from scratch and personally hires all of his employees. 2. Ken McDougall - McDougall Acres

You want to take the time to do your best. Take the time and create a document that is going to last you for years to come. If you already have a resume, it STILL needs to be updated and fixed so that it is suitable for this class :)
2) Here are some handouts to help you start your resume:

B) What do the following statements mean? Can you explain why they are important to new workers?
The right to know about the hazards of your job.
The right to participate in health and safety in the workplace.
The right to refuse work that you believe to be unusually dangerous to yourself and others.
Thursday, March 8, 2018
1) Go to this free WHMIS course and certification and work through the sections.(you will need head phones to do this). SAVE your certificate. This is not the official test, but will help you prepare for it. We will do the official test on Monday.
When I go into your workplace next week I have to check for any safety hazards. I will go in, look at the walls, the floor, the equipment, the ceiling, the windows, etc. and make sure it all appears safe. I will take pictures as I go and identify any potential dangers or issues with co-workers. Look at the following document for examples of what to look for. You have 15 minutes to go around the school and do a safety check. Come back in exactly 15 minutes. Hand your safety check into the basket!!!
What is the Labour Standards Act?The Labour Standards Act sets the rules for wages and working conditions in "most" Saskatchewan workplaces. Rules or standards are set for things like minimum wage (the least amount of money per hour that the employer can legally pay you), when you should get a work schedule, if you get a meal break, how often you must be paid and how many days you get off each week. These rules help to make sure workers are treated fairly. These rules cover ninety per cent of the jobs where you will be working in Saskatchewan. The other ten per cent of jobs, such as radio and television, air transport, broadcasting, grain elevators, banks, and many First Nations activities are covered by the Canada Labour Code (federal law). Some of the workplaces you work in may have a union. A union is an organization that represents the employees in that workplace. The union will negotiate an agreement with the employer about such things as wages, hours of work, hiring and lay-off procedures. This agreement is called a 'collective agreement.' This agreement will have at least the same rules as what is in The Labour Standards Act. If you work in a unionized workplace and you have a concern about working conditions or wages, you should talk to your union before you contact the Labour Standards Division. You are not covered by The Labour Standards Act if you baby sit occasionally for a neighbour, deliver papers, are self-employed (set up your own business) or if you work in a family business that only has immediate family members working there.Following is a list of topics Labour Standards are based upon. What do you know about the following?
1) Find one or two people you can work well with. If you don't know, I can help with this. If you choose to work by yourself, go for it!!!
2) Decide as a group which section you want to become an expert in from the the Rights and Responsibilities Guide document above and sign up on the board! Once a section has been taken there is NO REPEATING of that section (unless we run out of sections). I would research before you choose...
3) Now the work begins... It is your team's job to create an informational video on your sections. Basically, you are creating your own YouTube video explaining the Labour Standards Act.
***Make sure your video has an introduction, middle and closure. Your story line should flow together. Make it fun but be sure to make it informative!!
4) Questions......How do I do that? That is up to you and your group. As long as all the information is covered (as I will be grading this part)
What do we need to say in the video? You need to educate the public on your section of the Labour Standards Act.
How long does the video have to be? Time shouldn't be the issue. You should cover all information in a clear concise manner. Don't skip information as it will affect your mark. Missing information... Missing Marks
Can we use the Macs? yes
Can you use the iPad or one of the two iPods? Yes, if we can find them...
Can we use iMovie on our phones? Please do!
Can we use Windows Movie Maker? Absolutely
Here are a few links that you may want to go through to help you with making a movie:
Whatever is left of today and tomorrow's classes (we have a presenter tomorrow), as well as Thursday and Friday. You will be presenting these on TUESDAY.
1) Video Presentations
2) Folders
3) Green Sheets
This is a document that all interested parties (student, parent, employer and teacher) must sign before you can begin doing any work. This form will initiate the necessary insurance coverage in case of an accident. If this form is not signed by all parties you will not be able to begin work. I will go through the form with you today and explain how this will work.
4) We will apply for the job you will like to be interviewed for next Tuesday/Wednesday with YARA. The following two files each contain a mock job. You will choose one of the jobs and "tailor" your cover letter and resume for that job. REMEMBER: DO NOT SAVE OVER TOP OF YOUR OLD COVER LETTER - SAVE A NEW FILE. The advertisement will tell you where to email your updated resume to apply for the position.
Remember that you will be interviewed for this position so you better set yourself up to get this job!!! Here are a couple of PDF's that will help you adjust your cover letter and resume to put in the best position possible to get the job!! You are all in competition with one another!!! Make your cover letter and resume the most appealing by highlighting the transferable skills that YARA is looking for in that job!!
While you are working, I will call you in one by one to meet about your placement.
5) Once you have sent your resume in, come to my computer to sign-up for an interview time for Tues/Wed. First come first serve!

6) FINISH WHMIS
Monday. March 19, 2018 - *LIT Day IF FOR SOME REASON YOU HAVE NOT EMAILED YOUR RESUME/COVER LETTER TO YARA, YOU NEED TO DO THAT ASAP.
INTERVIEWS:
Discuss each question before watching the video.
1) What is meant by body language? What do you know about your body language what you are you telling people about you?
2) What mistakes do you think people make during an interview?
3) What do you think Employers want from a new hire? What do you have to offer an employer?
Tricky part - How do you tell an employer that without sounding like you are bragging?
4) Why should a company hire you?
5) How can you talk about yourself and not sound like you are bragging?
6) Preparing for the job you are applying for is critical. Make sure you know about the company you are applying for. Skim bold points as a class and discuss:
Go into room 225. Put the tables in center of room and chairs evenly on both sides (about 10 each side, most of you will need to bring a chair in)
Sit down on one side of the table. Students on far side by Macs will be the interviewers and the other side will be the interviewees.
The teacher will assign a different question off your printed document to each interviewer.
The time will start (1 minute). Interviewer will ask their question and interviewee will answer appropriately. Remember body language! AVOID AWKWARD SILENCES!
When time is up, interviewees slide down a chair to the right. Interviewer will ask the same question but now to a new person.
When you have rotated all the way through, discuss who was the best interviewee and WHY? What made them so good?
Now the interviewees side becomes the interviewers and REPEAT!
Again, discuss who did the best
2) For any interview you need to know something about the place you are going to work at. How embarrassing it would be to be asked in an interview, "What does this company do?" and not know anything about it and fumble some response that you know has blown the interview and any hope of getting the job. Next week you will be sitting in an interview for a pretend job at Yara. Here is a questionnaire about Yara that may help you out if you get asked that question!! Answer these in your journal section.
3) You will be marked on the YARA interview according to the document (the same one used for your actual job interview)posted below.
Please review this document and make sure you are well prepared.
The interviews will be held in the room 106 (Just down from the office before the main entrance). Please make sure you are in the chair outside the interview room 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
4) If this is your first experience at an interview you may be uncomfortable and maybe feel a little awkward. It may help to visualize the process a little. I want you and a partner to go through step by step what you think will happen in your interview and how you should respond.
For example:
You will be invited into the room....What do you say and do?
You will be introduced to the two people from YARA....What do you say and do?
You will probably have some small talk....What do you say and do?
so on and so on...
5) Practice responding to the interview questions from the speed dating with a partner for the remainder of the period.
Wednesday, March 21, 2018 1) Green sheets
2) Nearly everyone has a placement now.
3) Interview Prac??

You should come in and out of your work place like an EMPLOYEE! Are you causing your employer to work? Are you an asset to their place of business? These are things you need to think of.
a) Who do you think you are as a worker? List the TOP 5 things you are doing right and the TOP 5 things you need to work on.
b) What does an employee doing their job look like? Really think here.... Try not to state the obvious.
c) What is your growth plan? What do you think you need to focus on to make sure you are seen as an effective worker wherever you are working?
3) When Life Gets in the Way Assignment
We all grow up seeing what the world is like through the eyes of a child/teenager. However, the older you get the more you realize that everything isn't always sunshine and roses. I hate to break it to you... but at some point in your life, everything is going to go to crap... all at once.
Scenario:
You are the mother/father of 2 children (you choose the age) and your spouse just left you for another man/woman. You have relied 100% on your partner's income, as you stayed home to raise the children. Your spouse has not only left but is also refusing to answer the phone, send any money or take any responsibilities for his/her children. You also live in a community far away from any family, so you can't just ask your immediate family to come and babysit while you go to work.
You need to use this budget sheet in order to figure out what your expenses would be. DO NOT MAKE THESE UP. YOU NEED TO RESEARCH. Find a place in MJ/wherever you will live that is an appropriate cost, find out what your bills will be like, find a job and how much it will pay. Fortunately, you have finished your grade 12. Here is a form to keep track of your budget:
You must find a way to keep your household running. That means you need to feed your children and pay all the bills. This could mean a whole bunch of different scenarios, but that will be up to you to decide. You need to figure out what best works for you. You need to decide the following and put it in a presentation:
Where are you going to get money? (job, social assistance, etc...)
How will you care for your children? If you go to work, who will watch them? How will you get to work? If you don't work, how are you going to pay your bills?
Where are you going to live? What is your cost of living?
How much do you need for groceries? Clothing? Entertainment?
How will you keep yourself sane? You can't just work and parent 24/7. You will need to work in a time of your day/week, that is for you. Is that going to cost? What will that look like?
Moose Jaw Links - If you do not want Moose Jaw please put the city of YOUR choice. Finding a job websites - Moose Jaw Cost of living in Moose Jaw Finding living in Moose Jaw
You will need to create a presentation on how you are going to solve your life problems. There are several different routes you could choose... powerpoint, prezi, poster board, etc. But you NEED TO PICK ONE. Make sure when you go through every situation you explain why you chose that choice.
Websites that might help you get started. Don't limit yourself to just one source. As well, watch that you stay with Canadian sites.

Welcome to CWEX!

2. To you the student - What CWEX can offer you -3. Student Eligibility for work placement
What is the semester going to look like?
Today's Work:
Here is the website with the top 20 jobs in Canada
http://www.canadianbusiness.com/lists-and-rankings/best-jobs/2015-the-top-20-jobs/image/21/
Examples:
http://perfectisboring.wikispaces.com/home
http://alyssarenner.wikispaces.com/home
http://adrianmclaren.wikispaces.com/home
http://ariannatonner.wikispaces.com/home
http://staceemariegreensides.tumblr.com/
To start this process, you will be creating a wiki space for you to use. How do you do that??a) Go to www.wikispaces.com and create an account.
Monday, Feb 5
Our first unit is Work Study Preparation. Below are the objectives we will be covering.
1. Start choosing pictures that represent you. Print out this chart and fill it out as you go! It is a big part of your grade.
Thursday, February 8, 2018
1) Make sure you hand in your "Getting Along with Others"
2) Vision Board Self-Evaluation. Print out and fill this out about your vision board, then hand in to the folder. Fix up anything if necessary before we present in 10 minutes
3) Vision Board Presentations
Friday, February 9, 2018
*We have an a WorkSafe Saskatchewan assembly from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. on Monday We will meet in the classroom at 12:25 and then go together to the assembly.

D) Should we consider gender to define our roles?
E) What makes an effective (good) employee?
F) Employ-ability Skills - What does it take to get a job? Is it that easy to apply and get accepted right away?
4) Again, we are looking at the traits, qualities and personalities of what a good worker looks like. What we will be doing is viewing a few episodes of the show "Under Cover Boss". As we view it, I want you to look for and note the impact that the workers of these companies have on their profession. I am looking for participation and discussion so wake up!! Keep this doc as you will need it for a future assignment.
5) Sign up for Remind. This is a free and easy way for us to communicate without being able to see each other's numbers. That way, everything is confidential.
Monday, February 12, 2018 - *LIT dayToday we are focusing on YOU as a worker!
1) Journal (on your wiki) on the following quote (I am expecting a paragraph at least the same length as the quote). What does it mean to YOU?
2)Take the Dr Phil Test Test.

SCREENSHOT your result by clicking "Start,Snipping Tool". If the Snipping Tool does not appear, then click "Start, Accessories, Snipping Tool"3) Who are you? - We are going to use the Career Cruising program to uncover what your like and dislikes are when it comes to work. Some of you have used this program before. It is always interesting to revisit career exploration sites. We change with age (whether that is good or bad). As we grow with age, your like and dislikes also change. It could be something as easy as your likes in food, clothing, exercise routine (or lack of :-) ) to what kind of career you want. It is your job to uncover what profession will be best suited to your personality.
Tuesday, Feb 13, 2018
1.Did you do this yesterday??: Using the results above, use the remaining time to start researching where you will want to work. We will talk about this tomorrow/Friday. 3.
After watching the three episodes of Undercover Boss you will have identified the traits, qualities and personalities of good workers. With the list you have compiled from these episodes you will create a word cloud. There are a number of sites you can use to do this, so you must search the one you want to use. Here is an example: Wordle
4) We are going to have an independent business owner come present tomorrow. He is going to talk about what it takes to start your own business and what he looks for in employees and applicants. You should be prepared to ask questions so that you can learn more about the workforce. What sort of questions could we ask?

3) Labour Standards:
Your assignment is to do the following...

I will take pictures as I go and identify any potential dangers or issues with co-workers. Look at the following document for examples of what to look for. You have 15 minutes to go around the school and do a safety check. Come back in exactly 15 minutes. Hand your safety check into the basket!!!

This is a document that all interested parties (student, parent, employer and teacher) must sign before you can begin doing any work.

- Everyone print out this document.

Go into room 225. Put the tables in center of room and chairs evenly on both sides (about 10 each side, most of you will need to bring a chair in)2) For any interview you need to know something about the place you are going to work at.

Task:
You must find a way to keep your household running. That means you need to feed your children and pay all the bills. This could mean a whole bunch of different scenarios, but that will be up to you to decide. You need to figure out what best works for you. You need to decide the following and put it in a presentation:
You will need to create a presentation on how you are going to solve your life problems. There are several different routes you could choose... powerpoint, prezi, poster board, etc. But you NEED TO PICK ONE. Make sure when you go through every situation you explain why you chose that choice.Websites that might help you get started. Don't limit yourself to just one source. As well, watch that you stay with Canadian sites.
